3 simple things pug owners need to remember when choosing a dog collar

Pugs are funny little things.

Their oddities are endearing, but can sometimes can lead to trouble – their strange loaf-like proportions, flat faces and excess of skin make finding the right fit a little tricky.

Here’s what you should look out for to find the best collar for a pug:

1 . Free the airway

We all know that pugs find it difficult to breathe. They might be badly designed, but there are a few actions we can take to ease that struggle:

The right accessories

Select accessories that keep their airway unobstructed – it’s the easiest thing we can do to help our pug!

For at-home lazy days, these neckties are ideal. They were designed for pugs as they’re super comfy and loose fitting. They have the swag of a bandana with the practicality of a tag.

When you’re off out for walkies, a comfy harness instead of a collar is the best option, keeping their neck open and free from any aggravation.

BOAS surgery

Another step to offer the best possible life for our pugs is BOAS surgery. This has now become a routine procedure that improves the life of a brachy dog dramatically. It was a simple surgery and my pug was so much happier when she could breathe easier!

2 . Find comfort

Neck rolls galore, pugs can often have sensitive necks where their skin overlaps. My pug has a balding patch on her chest from poorly made harnesses. Look out for comfy fabrics with extra padding and always opt for a harness instead of a traditional collar. Pair with a comfy necktie and away you go!

3 . Make it fully adjustable

To refrain from causing any irritation from poorly fitting collars and harnesses, choose one that is fully adjustable! Pugs come in all shapes and sizes and these soft neckties can be adjusted to fit them all.

Good luck!
